Sister Joan Ann Hallerman, O.S.B. died suddenly on Saturday, March 6, 2010.
Born in Richmond, Virginia on December 2, 1934, she became a member of the Benedictine Sisters at Saint Benedict Monastery in Bristow, Virginia in 1952.   Having received her B.A. in education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Sister Joan Ann was an elementary school teacher for her entire career of 56 years.  She taught at St. Paul’s, St. Benedict’s, St. Rose of Lima and Sacred Heart in the Diocese of Richmond, and at St. Charles, St. Leo’s, and All Saints in the Diocese of Arlington.  She was assigned to the Benedictine Sisters Linton Hall School in Bristow four times in her years of teaching and spent the past 36 years there.

Beloved by her sisters in community, her students and many of the Linton Hall Alum, Sister Joan Ann was often visited by returning students.  She loved arts and crafts and ran the Sisters’ Christmas sale for many years.  Always at the center of the community, Sister Joan Ann was in charge of the Benedictine Sisters’ ministry of hospitality and was a welcoming presence for visitors.
Sister Joan Ann is survived by her niece, Mary Declan Hallerman, and the 32 sisters of her Benedictine community.
All services will be held at 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, VA 20136. Visitation will be at the Benedictine Sisters’ chapel on Tuesday beginning at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  The funeral will be held on Wednesday in the Linton Hall School gymnasium at 10:30 a.m. with visitation prior to the funeral at 9:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in the Benedictine Sisters cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for the Linton Hall School Scholarship fund.   For more information please contact Sister Cecilia Dwyer, O.S.B. at 703-361-0106.

We are a community of thirty-two women living The Rule of Benedict, supporting one another in our mutual search for God and ministering to the needs of the Church in Virginia since 1868.
Our daily life in the monastery is comprised of communal prayer, meaningful ministry and the sharing of life in common. Praying the psalms, or the Liturgy of the Hours, at morning,  midday and evening, we bring the needs of our world to the time-less praise of God.
Our ministries, as diverse as the individuals who bring them to life,  include: a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children (Transitional  Housing BARN), an adult literacy project (BEACON), a pastoral center (BPC), a counseling center providing service on a sliding scale (BCS), an elementary school (Linton Hall), and a secondary school for young women in the city of Richmond  (Saint Gertrude High School).  Common meals, household chores, and holy  leisure round out the monastic life.   Essentially, we are sanctified by the daily - by seeking God in the everyday moments of life lived simply with gratitude and joy.
