| A Funeral Reflection by Sister Cecilia Dwyer, OSB August 6, 2010 | Sister Charlotte continues to make improvements at the rehabilitation center and her spirit of action and hope are ever present. Sister Connie Ruth continues to make improvements in the Intermediate Care Unit of Fairfax INOVA hospital. Due to the taxing nature of recovery, Sister Charlotte nor Sister Connie Ruth can accept visitors at this time. Visitation remains limited to family and the monastic community for both sisters. Thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray for their full recovery. Please monitor this site for updates of the Sisters' condition. |

Benedictine Sisters of Virginia Official Statement as of 12:00 noon on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 The Benedictine Sisters of Virginia are mourning the loss of Sister Denise Mosier and praying for the recovery of Sister Charlotte Lange and Sister Connie Ruth Lupton. These sisters were involved in head-on collision on Sunday, August 1, 2010. The Benedictine Sisters are dismayed and saddened that this tragedy has been politicized and become an apparent forum for the illegal immigration agenda. While grieving and dealing with the death and severe injuries of our sisters, we would like to re-focus attention on the consequences of drinking and driving, and on Christ’s command to forgive. The young driver of the other car will experience the consequences of his decisions through our justice system. We sincerely hope this heartbreak will help him evaluate his decisions and give him motivation to make life-changing choices. We will continue to pray for him and his family. The statement of our Bishop, Paul Loverde, reminds us all - our faith gives us the knowledge that God is with us always and in all things, even in this profound sorrow. He further stresses that the tragedies resulting from drinking and driving are avoidable. We are confident that Sister Denise is in the arms of our loving God and hopeful that the two injured sisters will be restored to health. We are also confident that responses of mercy and forgiveness, though usually not easy, are not optional for Christians and are required in order to preserve and promote the dignity of life at all stages.
Immaculate Conception Chapel, Saint Benedict Monastery
| We are a community of thirty-one women living The Rule of Benedict, supporting one another in our mutual search for God and ministering to the needs of the Church in Virginia since 1868. Our daily life in the monastery is comprised of communal prayer, meaningful ministry and the sharing of life in common. Praying the psalms, or the Liturgy of the Hours, at morning, midday and evening, we bring the needs of our world to the time-less praise of God. | Our ministries, as diverse as the individuals who bring them to life, include: a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children (Transitional Housing BARN), an adult literacy project (BEACON), a pastoral center (BPC), a counseling center providing service on a sliding scale (BCS), an elementary school (Linton Hall), and a secondary school for young women in the city of Richmond (Saint Gertrude High School). Common meals, household chores, and holy leisure round out the monastic life. Essentially, we are sanctified by the daily - by seeking God in the everyday moments of life lived simply with gratitude and joy. |
