 | Since making her recording debut in 1995 with the heart-rending “Songs from the Levee,” Kate Campbell has put together an amazing body of work, 11 collections to date, each notable for its consistent excellence, its honesty and intimate artfulness. Included in these compositions are contributions from legendary artists such as Spooner Oldham, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Buddy Miller and others. Kate’s combined skills as a historian and musician contribute to the narrative blend of history, memories and music in each of her songs. “Her songs capture the heart of the Southland in a way that some have likened to William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams,” Lee Zimmerman, Goldmine. Born to a Baptist minister in Sledge, Mississippi, Kate spent her early years singing at Sunday services. As a teenager she began writing songs and playing the guitar. Upon receiving a Masters degree in Southern History, she moved to Nashville to teach college history and work on songwriting. Kate’s albums, MoonPie Dreams (1997) and Visions of Plenty (1998), each garnered “Folk Album of the Year” nominations from the Nashville Music Awards. Campbell has wowed crowds at the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival (England), Merlefest, the legendary Philadelphia Folk Festival and Port Fairy Folk Festival (Australia) and has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Mountain Stage. Ballet Memphis featured Kate’s songs in a ballet based on her music entitled South of Everywhere. And, Kate tours extensively throughout the US as well as the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.
